eating
You must have carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals salts and fibre in the correct proportions. If there is not enough protein, you will not be able to grow properly and you will not be able to repair yourself i.e. wounds will not heal properly. If you do not have enough energy containing foods you will feel very tired, you will not have enough energy. If you have too much energy containing foods you will become overweight. If you think that you are overweight you might try taking more exercise to "burn off" some of the excess food which you ate at you last meal.
The key to a healthy lifestyle and keeping your weight in check is following a balanced diet that includes all the right foods in the right amounts.
A balanced diet refers to intake of appropriate types and adequate amounts of foods and drinks to supply nutrition and energy for the maintenance of body cells, tissues, and organs, and to support normal growth and development.
A well-balanced diet includes food from the five main food groups.
These are:
- bread, cereal (including breakfast cereals) and potatoes (starchy foods),
- fruit (including fresh fruit juice) and vegetables,
- meat and fish,
- milk and dairy foods, and
- fat and sugar.
some easy recipes
Spaghetti Carbonara
Ingredients
1/4 Packet of Spaghetti
Salt to taste
2 Eggs
2-3 slices of smoked streaky bacon
Cayenne or Black Pepper
Grated Parmesan Cheese
Method
Cook the spaghetti as directed on the packet with salt to taste. Meanwhile; Beat the eggs and place to one side, adding salt to taste if required. Cut up the bacon into strips and fry in a little butter or oil until golden and crispy. Once the spaghetti is cooked, you need to drain and return the spaghetti to the still warm pan, stirring in the beaten egg, cooked bacon and cayenne or black pepper to taste. Stir for 1-2 minutes; the heat of the sauce pan should just be enough to cook the egg; but you can use a very low heat to keep it warm - too hot and the eggs will become scrambled...
Serve immediately with the grated Parmesan. Serves 1 - 2
Chilli Tomato and Bacon Pasta
Ingredients
2 rashers of bacon per person
1/2 tin of chopped tomatoes per person
Chilli Powder
Basil
100g pasta per person

Cook the pasta as instructed on the packet. When there are about 7 minutes remaining, begin cooking the bacon, chopped into small pieces (this is easiest with scissors) in a pan with some oil. When cooked, add the chopped tomatoes and stir well. Then add a reasonable amount of chilli powder and some basil, along with some seasoning and heat gently until piping hot throughout.
When the pasta is cooked, drain off and return to the heat with the sauce added. Stir the sauce through the pasta, and serve immediately. You could even add a sprig of fresh basil to the top of the pasta if you're feeling really posh ;). Et voila!

Pesto Chicken with Cous Cous
Ingredients (for 1)
1 Skinless Chicken Breast
1 tablespoon of ready made pesto (bought in jars, and lasts for ages!)
1 slice bread (brown, white, or granary)
1 serving of Cous Cous (should say on packet how much 1 serving is, or have as much as you desire!)
1/2 white onion
Balsamic Vinegar
Method
Place the chicken breast on a baking tray and pop in the oven for about 15 mins (180 - 200 degrees). Whilst this is cooking use the bread to make breadcrumbs.
Take the chicken out, and place a layer of pesto on the top, then a layer of breadcrumbs, and do this twice, adding extra breadcrumbs on the top. Pop back in the oven for around another 15-25 mins, or until cooked thoroughly.
5 mins before the chicken is ready, dice the onion, and fry in a little oil until soft. Right at the very end, make the cous cous according to the packet, usually yo just pour boiling water over, then leave for a minute or two. Add the cooked onions to the cous cous then add some balsamic vinegar according to taste.
Take the chicken out of the oven, and place on top of the cous cous. If you find this a little dry, add some sour cream to some pesto, mix, and drizzle round the cous cous, which can be used as a sauce, or dip.
Roasted vegetable pasta
Ingredients
Pasta
Hot water
Vegetables you've got lying around, such as
Shalots
Onions
Mushrooms
Tomatoes
Red & Yellow Peppers
Some form of tomato sauce, either proper Dolmio type stuff or just use a little tinned tomato stuff (much cheaper)
Vegetable Oil
Method
Chop up your veg roughly. put it in an oven dish, add a wee bit of vegetable oil, and slosh it about till everything's covered. Shove it in the oven at an intermediate temperature until they're all nice and soft (shalots and onions will prob take longest).
Shove the pasta in a pan of hot water, stirring continuously until cooked through (or it'll stick to the pan horribly).
Strain your pasta, mix in your pasta sauce (the heat from the pasta will heat it up) and your roasted vegetables, and you're done, a nice, healthy meal.
