safety + security

First time living out of home, in a big city, or in a new country? It can be a little daunting at first…

Our most important concern is your safety and that of your fellow residents. If you see an accident or potentially hazardous situation, report it immediately to either Reception (Mon-Fri business hours), the on-duty RA or to Security (after hours).

Be aware of your own personal security – lock all doors and windows whenever you leave your apartment or when alone at home. Other personal safety tips include:

  • At night, walk only in well-lit areas – and ideally travel with a companion.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash on your person.
  • Walk upright and confidently when walking alone and be alert of your surroundings – avoid doorways, bushes and alleyways.
  • If out socialising, never leave your drink unattended and keep your purse or wallet with you at all times.
  • Report any suspicious activity to Reception, the on-duty RA or University Security immediately.
  • The emergency toll free phone number for Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade is 000 (Australia) or 111 (New Zealand).
  • Most University websites will have safety tips and information – the following links provide some information that can be applied anywhere:
